Software/Web Design
Updated 05/11/2007 jph
I mostly work in Progress 4GL but also 'C' for the Palm Pilot and Basic
for the Basic Stamp microcontroller.
Recently I wrote a Web Server program in Progress 4GL v9.1d. It
also runs Progress programs to dynamically generate web content and interactive
forms for editing Progress database records. I have also written
XML-RPC and SOAP interfaces for Progress.

Recommendations for Software Packages I use and find helpful:
-
Spybot Search & Destroy:
(Free - Donations Encouraged) Recover your system after Hijack and Spyware
programs infest it. I curse the conscienceless maggots who write
those programs. Especially Xupiter and InternetAntiSpy which infests
your computer then exthorts $80 for the program to remove it.
-
Quetek File Scavenger: ($39.95
and worth much more) Recover files you accidentally deleted from Win NT/2000/XP.
They have an emergency download that will fit on a floppy so you can use
a different computer to download it, then bring it over to your untouched-since-your-stupid-mistake
computer, then it will show you all the files it might be able to recover.
If it looks like this will do the trick, then you can buy the license code
via credit card over the web (again, on a different computer) and recover
them. Easy and fast.
-
BlackICE Defender: personal firewall.
Amazing how many times per day your computer is attacked and you don't
even know it.
-
WinVi: (Freeware) Windows version
of the UNIX vi editor. Easy to use.
-
TextPad: a replacement for MS-Windows Notepad. Has tabs, macros,
syntax highlighting, etc.

Internet Explorer Security
Settings : Simple: disable everything (well, almost). Remove
aol.com from the Trusted Sites section that it so helpfully auto-adds itself
to. Add these scumsucking hijack sites to your Restricted Sites List
(or better yet, add to the Blocked Forever sites in BlackICE):
-
xupiter.com: They appear to be a legitimate marketing company but
their tactics are inexcusable. When you agree to download certain
games, the fine print of the license agreement says you also are agreeing
to download monitoring software that will take over your computer.
In a stupid and counterproductive move, the monitoring software criples
your computer so badly that you immediately recognize there is a problem
and have to remove it, so I don't understand what these idiots hope to
acheive unless they are being paid by others to wreck havoc in order to
increase the market for anti-spyware programs? Really, why go to
all the work to write and distribute spyware if it doesn't work?
-
internetantispy.com (these suckers change your home page to say you
are infected, then demand $80 for the disinfection program. I really
don't know how they can live with themselves.)
-
default-homepage-network.com: A whole company devoted to helping
other companies hijack your computer.
