STAC Event 11/28/2000: Hangar Work Session

It was cold and snowy so I didn't expect very good attendance.  Also, I had to meet with someone later in the evening, but I did go to the hangar anyway.

I worked on the shock cord attachment to the motor thrust ring for my new BSD Thor rocket.  The kit came with a cheap looking eye-bolt which I replaced with a U-bolt for greater strength.  Also cleaned up a bit and rounded up parts for the 12v Relay Launcher project which is coming together well.

After getting back home, I found that Ray had actually shown up at the hangar just after I left.  So I invited him to my house and we discussed the club and rocketry stuff and reviewed the new STAC Web Page.  He has a source for the dense foam that we need for the "Rocket Boxes" project to build secure storage and transportation units for model rockets.  We also reviewed my rapidly growing library of rocketry books, which is now even larger thanks to Ray's kind donation of the 1977 edition of "The New Rocketry  Manual"  by G. Harry Stine.

We inspected my latest ebay find: the "Alpha-1 Ballistic Missile" by Scientific Products.   It is an early 1960s toy rocket powered by baking soda and vinegar.  I don't have the instructions yet, but am expecting a copy from another fan of this item that I met through the rec.models.rockets newsgroup.

Finally, we worked on an improved water rocket launcher design that will not be as susceptible to freeze-up in cold weather.

This Saturday is looking good for a launch.  Might be cold, but clear and with low winds.
